NM Brevet Series
If you have pre-registered,
please be at the starting location ready to ride 15 minutes before the start of the brevet for announcements. We will include
information about the course, current road conditions, construction issues, and a discussion about the weather. If you have not pre-registered, please do so at least a half an hour before, especially for the
200k's. Having the forms filled out w/ check in hand is helpful too. There are only 2 or 3 of us and 2 of us are
riding the event. Thanks for your cooperation in this regard. We are usually camped in our old
'61 Airstream and therefore not necessarily current on developing weather, your collective input is helpful for others who
might be new to the area and/or less experienced, or less connected to current information for whatever resaon. This
is team work all around. Those who will finish the quickest, usually have the most knowledge to impart...please
impart as needed and please ask more experienced riders as you need. Ultra-distance riding makes all this elemental
anyway, so ask or impart away. Knowledge fosters comfort which fosters exploration, let's help each other out in this regard.
We are all here for the love of long distance cycling and few informational 'secrets' are worth withholding compared to the
mutual gain from sharing to where you all gain. The greater the distance the more need of sharing the pain. This being said,
don't give up on your personal goals as your partners may change. That is creedo with randonneuring, do your best! Forming
teams is important, encouraged, especially if conditions change. Be ready to help each other, but there are times when
your preparedness cannot overcome your new found partner's lack thereof. Preparation and anticipation are the keys to success.
We ask you to get to know your riding partners. How and why are you together at this moment? Ultra-distance riding is
more about relating to and diminishing your fellow riders pain than inflicting it. You both will do better with each other
exponentially as the distance grows. Ultimately, this is about everyone finishing safely. As you sign in we will ask
to see your lights and reflective gear. RUSA rules require reflective gear to be worn during night riding. This is especially
helpful in our longer brevets as there are many narrow, winding roads where visual sighting is restricted. Reflective tape
on moving parts such as ankle bands or heel tape, several pieces of tape on rims all give drivers a sense that #1, you know
what you are doing and you will be treated more respectfully by them. NM State laws require a headlight and a tail light
that can be seen 500'. We find that a blinking headlight is helpful in dawn and dusk conditions and while the law states
that the tail light is a constant light, we find blinking lights to much more visible and we often use more than one.
When you show up at the start you should already have already checked in and received your brevet card,
route sheet, have your gear and cycle in order, have said thanks for creating this challenge, because you are going to hate
us afterward...kidding of course...hopefully.
