It was a dark and stormy start
to the event of the NM Brevet Series. Nate Berg and Joe Moore showed up on their bikes in the rain. Matt and Jeni
Turgeon, of NM Endurance Series fame scoffed at the condtitions and encouraged everyone to accept the challenge. He
and Jeni detoured into Starbucks for a quick cup while Donnie Cole joined the group. Don Brown and Skip Wrightson decided
that they didn't want to leave in the rain with conditions deteriorating. Off into the rain the riders went which
quickly turned to snow. Matt and Jeni turned around at that point for what Matt called "the quickest DNF ever" and
decided to ride their car instead and provide support help. It was a beautiful sight of the riders chugging through
the slush and clouds to the Morningstar Store, where a lot of wringing of wet clothes took place. Fortified with rubber
gloves, plastic bags, and muffins the ride continued. The weather did get better, but Nate had a "full day of fun"
at Mountainair and jumped into the Turgeon's wagon. Joe and Donnie pressed on and peeled off layers on the return.
Finishing with time to spare aplenty and under sunny skies again, the randonneurs returned triumphant over distance and capricious
early spring weather NM weather.
